After dropping their last two games to Madison County and Luray, Stonewall Jackson High School was desperately in need of a win on homecoming night, Oct. 17.
The Riverheads Gladiators (5-2, 2-0) wanted to keep their district record perfect. The Generals (3-4, 0-2) took a 10-6 halftime lead only to see Riverheads score two second-half touchdowns and go ahead 20-10.
The Gladiators struck first in their second possession going 63 yards on eight plays capped by a 15-yard pass from Cameron Brown to Joseph Cash. The PAT was no good.
Stonewall took the ensuing kickoff to the 30 yard line with 4:43 left to go in the first quarter. They marched 70 yards on 15 plays and scored with 8:02 left in the half. Dylan Dawson scored from two yards out. The PAT by Juan Luna Guerrero put the Generals up 7-6.
The second half was completely dominated by the Gladiators. On their first possession, they drove 73 yards on nine plays when Cash bulled in from the two yard line.
The PAT was good for a 13-10 lead.
After a Stonewall fumble with :05 left in the third quarter, Riverheads drove 52 yards in eight plays capped by a Cory Sandridge three-yard touchdown. The PAT was good to make the final margin 20-10.
The Gladiators were led by Sandridge with 81 yards and Montana Puffenbarger with 79 yards. Stonewall was led by Dylan Dawson with 89 yards.
The Generals travel to defending state champions Buffalo Gap on Friday. Riverheads will host Luray.
